Background:

Wiggle stereoscopy, also referred to as wiggle 3-D or wobble 3-D, is a technique that brings stereograms to life by animating the left and right images. This creates a sense of depth through parallax and changes in the occlusion of background objects. Unlike other stereo display techniques, both eyes are presented with the same image.

While wiggle stereoscopy allows for perceiving stereoscopic images, it is important to note that it is not a "true" three-dimensional stereoscopic display format as each eye does not receive a separate view. The apparent stereo effect is achieved by synchronizing the wiggle timing and parallax with the visual cortex's processing.

Wiggling works similarly to how a transitional pan or tracking shot in a film provides depth information. The visual cortex can infer distance from motion parallax, which is the relative speed of perceived motion between different objects on the screen. In nature, many small animals bob their heads to create motion parallax (wiggling) to better estimate distance before jumping.
